Moyes Family Reunion Photo Gallery!

These 18 photographs in the "Moyes Family Reunion Photo Gallery!" are from my mother and dad's family picture album. I am delighted to share these photographs with you. If a photo brings up a memory along the way I've added that information in the caption under the photo.

When I was a kid growing up, Grandma Goodman and Aunt Robina lived in Murtaugh, Idaho. Aunt Jane Eve lived in Twin Falls, Idaho and Aunt Myrtle lived in Pocatello, Idaho.
They were close and visited each other as circumstances would permit. As you will see in this "Moyes Family Reunion Photo Gallery!" I have more pictures from the sisters' families than I do from the brothers. In fact from some of the nine brothers I have no pictures.

George and Eva are siblings and are Uncle and Aunt to Grandma Annie Moyes Goodman. These three individuals drove up from Ogden, Utah to Murtaugh, Idaho just for this reunion--to see their many nieces and nephews and their children. I was blessed to meet these individuals. They were my Great-great Aunt and Uncles.

George and Eva came from a family of 14 children. It was their parents (William Moyes and Robina Gowans Moyes) who were born in Scotland and immigrated to Utah. Four siblings were born in Scotland. One sibling was born during the voyage in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and the last nine children were all born in Ogden, Utah. Eva (1885-1979) was the youngest of the 14 children. Most of my children were born by the time their Great-great-great Aunt Eva Moyes Ehmann passed away!

As you can see I've done some guessing. So help me if you can to identify individuals with an e-mail or post a comment in this blog.

My Great Uncle Dave Moyes Family!

The Children of Uncle Dave and Aunt Geneva Walker Moyes:
1. Elna Bell Moyes
2. Effie Jane Moyes
3. David Ivan Moyes
4. Wayne Walker Moyes
5. Marva Ruth Moyes
6. Geneva Arleen Moyes
who are Moyes 1st Cousins to my dad, Everett Lee Goodman.

Ivan & Mae Egbert Moyes
24 July 1992
at the wedding reception of Wendy Mow and Michael Bone.
Wendy is the daughter of Sandra Dee Goodman Mow Reid who is the daughter of Everett Goodman who is a Moyes 1st Cousin to Ivan. Wow! So that makes Ivan and Wendy 1st cousins twice removed!
My mother reports with fondness the times Ivan and Mae would stop in Prescott and visit her in the later years.

Of all my Moyes relatives it was Ivan and Mae to whom I was the most intimate. We lived only about a mile for each other. My dad and Ivan had their farms both adjacent to Murtaugh Lake. Ivan and Mae lived next door to his parents:
David Gowans Moyes
(1889-1962)
and
Geneva Maryett Walker Moyes
(1890-1976)
Uncle Dave was child #3 among 13 siblings. Uncle Dave was serving as Murtaugh Ward Bishop when my parents, Everett Lee Goodman and Opal Tenney were married. They needed help so Uncle Dave drove them and his older sister, Annie Moyes Goodman (Everett's mother) to the Salt Lake Temple in November 1932.

When I got old enough I was called to babysit Ivan and Mae's children on several occasions. They would usually go into Twin Falls for a church stake meeting or to a movie or date night. I remember Ivan returning me back home and sitting in their car and he'd have the radio on. I was always sleepy but enjoyed his car very much.

Ivan and Mae first lived in a little white wood frame house just north of his dad and mom's place. Later Ivan and Mae moved into the big house when his folks moved out.

I also worked for Ivan on his farm. I especially enjoyed the family farm dinner served around the big table. I really liked my Moyes 2nd Cousins--the little boys were fun to play with. I remember Ivan wishing there was a water faucet at the dining table so it would be easier to refill our glasses. What a novel idea I thought.
One particular incident really impressed me. I was riding the bean planter. My job was to make sure the auger was not blocked so the bean seeds would drop one at a time. The planter was attached to the tractor Ivan was driving. At the end of each row he would raise the planter with the hydraulic lift to make a 180 degree turn then drop the planter and start another row. On one turn his wheels went over a mound of dirt at the same time the planter was being lifted. The momentum of the whole thing threw me up in the air and I landed on the ground! In those days they did not have seat belts. I was unhurt but it bonded me with Ivan for ever more. Ivan was generous with his salary and I really loved money. Well, I didn't have much cash in those days!

you in our ward. We hope you are all well and happy. Love Mae & Ivan

Back Row: Steven Fredrick Larson, David Wayne Larson, Donna Rae Larson
and Larry Lee Larson.

Effie is the daughter of Uncle Dave and Aunt Geneva Walker Moyes
and a Moyes 1st Cousin to my dad, Everett Lee Goodman.
Effie and Everett were born in the same town, Lyman, Wyoming!

The Larson family moved to Murtaugh while I was in high school. David was one grade younger and in the same grade as my sister, Lynda. David married one of our good friends--Carma Olson. I had actually dated Carma. I think it was the Murtaugh High School Sadie Hawkins Dance and we had a corsage made out of garden vegetables! Jeannie, my wife, and our children stayed overnight with David and Carma on our trip to the National Boy Scout Training Center at Philmont, New Mexico. David and Carma and their family were living in Albuquerque at the time. We have great memories of our Larson/Moyes 2nd Cousins!

My first experience to play tennis came from Donna. She took some of us kids to the new Murtaugh High School Tennis Courts (which were built after I left there) and showed us how to play. That's when I realized I was better at milking cows than playing tennis!

Behind their grocery store, Shorty's Market.

When Cherry Rutledge would come to shop with her family I'd chase her around in the store. This is the first recorded account of my aggressive-assertive male traits revealing itself!
I was three years old at the time.
Lova Watts became one of my piano teachers. Aunt Pearl Tenney, my mother's youngest sister, was our local Murtaugh, Idaho telephone operator for a time. We would crank the old box and she'd come on and say "Number please!" The telephone office was just a half block away for our home/store.

Marva Moyes is the daughter of Uncle Dave and Geneva Walker Moyes and a 1st Cousin to my dad. They lived on a farm by Murtaugh Lake about a mile from our farm home which was also by Murtaugh Lake.

Angelyn is the daughter of Uncle Will and Aunt Robina Moyes Adamson and a Moyes 1st Cousin to my dad.

[This photograph had no identification on it. It was my guess with Angelyn Adamson. If you have an update on her identity please e-mail or post a comment in this blog.]

William Arthur Adamson

Uncle Will was a gifted craftsman. He specialized in cabinet making and finish work. He helped build our new detached garage on our Murtaugh, Idaho farm in the early 1950's. He always showed deference to me as his grand-nephew. Maybe because I was Billy and he was Will! And then again it might have been because I loved him. He was probably one of the smallest relatives I had known in physical statue but he made up for it with his skills. He had crafted the stairs going up to the attic floor in our new garage where he helped build my big new model Lionel Train layout. It was 8'X8' plywood with study legs. The garage was never connected live with electricity while we lived there and we left in 1957. We had to string extension cords from the house and that worked just fine. Jackie's dance studio was on the main floor as an extension of the two-car garage. I have such sweet, sweet memories of my Uncle Will Adamson!

Myrtle Ivene Moyes Exeter
My dad's Aunt.
In August 1967 Jeannie, my wife, and I and our first born child, David, were on our way to Alberta, Canada to begin our career teaching for the Church Educational System. I was to be the Indian Seminary Coordinator for Central Alberta. We were hauling a little trailer with all our earthly possessions. We made arrangements to stay overnight in Pocatello, Idaho with Uncle Ernest and Aunt Myrtle. They graciously hosted us and we had a delightful time. Because I had shown interest in family history and genealogy she gave me some original old photographs which have been in this blog.

Years later when the Everett and Opal Tenney Goodman Reunion was taking place in Washington State, Aunt Myrtle and her son, Merlin, drove to our mountain lodge to visit. That was a very special experience for all of us kids. Aunt Myrtle reminded us that our dad was the oldest child and the oldest grandchild in the extended Moyes family. Everett is the oldest of 79 grandchildren or Moyes 1st Cousins.

Myrtle Ivene Moyes

Age 9 Months
Myrtle is child #9 among 13 siblings. Myrtle is an aunt to my Dad, Everett Lee Goodman. They were born in the same town, Lyman, Wyoming. Aunt Myrtle is 5 years older then my dad.

Wedding Reception of Dwaine Junior and Betty Faye Carter Exeter
20 August 1954
Pocatello, Idaho
Dwaine is my dad's Moyes 1st Cousin and the son of Ernest Ioan and
Myrtle Ivene Moyes Exeter.

My mother, Opal Tenney Goodman, drove from Murtaugh to Pocatello, Idaho for the wedding reception. She was always looking for excitement. After the reception she wanted to follow these kids to their honeymoon quarters. While chasing them and following them in their car we came to the Union Pacific Railroad tracks with no semaphore to stop us. As we crossed the tracks the train speeding down the tracks saw us and blasted the horn. The train light was the brightest thing I've ever seen this side of death! I've never been so close to being killed by a train in my life. We made it, barely, but I'll never forget what it's like chasing two young marrieds down that street in Pocatello! I've been quite cautious ever since in crossing any railroad tracks! That was one of the early "Tender Mercies" I've come to recognize in my life.
